I'm currently taking mms for roughly 2 weeks already on protocol 1000. 8 hours religiously. I contracted staph doing Martial arts, went to the Dr and gave me bactrim antibiotics for 10 days, it helped but then returned a bit. bought mms, on second week, i feel more energy now, and I'm also using a spray every hour for 8 hours along with my 8 hours daily dosage. the doc did his diagnosis, confirmed it was staph and tried to use all of those fine sounding and expensive antibiotics on me, I bought them, to apease him, but I never used them and did MMS protocols instead; I was rid of it in about 10 days. This was in 2008, I've never had a relapse. My mother-in-law, whom I love dearly, did all that docs told her, including operations and she's still not well, she can't barely walk, still is on antibiotics, and it looks like it may kill her. Try as I may I cannot convince her to try MMS because of what the trolls have posted online about MMS. In my  book, her great suffering is on their hands.

I sometimes get congestion in my one lung,, I'm a smoker, so I always keep an atomizer spray full of MMS, a few deep inhales every four or five weeks      cleans my lung out brilliantly,,

    I had cellutitus that is a staph infection and it kept coming back. The doctor told me I was not keeping the area clean. I need to bathe more often when I hadn't changed up how I bathed.  Since I have been taking MMS it is all gone.  Plus my blood pressure I was having to take every day I am now down to taking it every 2 or 3 days instead of every day.  I have Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis and my back hurts all the time and I can't take anything but Advil because I end up in the emergency room if I take Vicodin, codeine, etc.  Since I have been taking MMS that pain is gone.  MMS does work!  They want you to think it doesn't so the AMA can sell you their drugs.  I call them the American Murder Association!  God Bless and try it and do what it says!  What do you have to lose????

My best friend had full blown aids and weighed only 80 pounds. I gave him mms every day and 8 times a day. He gained 50 pounds and was solid. I    took him for blood tests and they could not find any hiv in his test results.. I believe he had hpv as well and that too was gone.. Mms is a threat to the people           who want to control us and want population control. You all need to get as much mms as possible and stock pile the stuff and learn all of the protocols and spread the word and not let the enemy stop this revolution.. God gave us MMS. MMS worked for me on 2 different occasions. Four years ago I cured a staph infection in 2 weeks that had plagued me for 4 months. It never came back.    Six months ago I used it for meningitis and was cured in 1 week. It is not bleach. I have an             anemia of the hemoglobin and can't use bleach to clean with, etc as it causes nausea, cyanosis and headaches. I never had any of these reactions with MMS. Listen to Lindsay!

At the age of only 8 years old (8 years ago), my son was diagnosed with melanoma and had to have a huge chunk of flesh   removed from his forearm.  Imagine the devastated feeling I had   as a father. About 5 years ago, my son got another spot on the   back of his ankle. They would have cut his Achilles tendon to remove it!  He would never have been able to walk again. I searched for alternative ways of healing him, and found Jim Humble. I emailed Jim, and he gave me the protocol for curing   my son of melanoma. I can’t THANK YOU  enough for stopping by and going out of your way to see me. I was very happy to see you and I know you have a busy schedule so making that detour was a sacrifice.

Sorry you had to see me in skin and bones at 110 pounds, but somehow you’ve given me faith to continue on.  I am taking the baths with MMS at night, which helps me sleep through the night.  It’s amazing.  For the last four or five days, no pain what so ever.  I don’t know if I told you, but all my doctors a the V.A. gave up on me.  They really used the old phrase, “you’ve done all we can do, go home and get your affairs in order.”  My primary care doctor asked me why I wanted to have a vitamin D blood test, because it doesn’t do anything. This is there training Mark.  They have great memories and are like parrots, but they don’t understand the body and how to heal.  Only how to treat symptoms.I have been reading your book, it’s truly a treasure. You’ve put something in print that everyone should be reading. THANK YOU.

I don’t know why, but I feel extremely happy.  Sometimes I wake up smiling and laughing.  I believe I have a great positive attitude and will get through this rough period.  Everyone thought I was going to die in early December 2017, and we even had Christmas two weeks early.  I did get my affairs in order and gave everything away.  Outside of my clothes, I own nothing.  I gave everything to my kids and grandkids.  I feel like I am the richest man in the world.  Tomorrow is Easter and I feel like I’m on track with God for the first time in many decades. 

I’m sharing your book with my family and hope they will become followers too.  I plan on staying on the program for at least seven years.  I’m keeping away from all the Monsanto food.  I love the meal plan you’ve encouraged me to restart.

In addition please could you respond to the following:

                        - you say your chemicals clean out the body - is                              
autism something to be cleaned out?

- you refer to post MMS treatment as being able to function correctly - is someone with autism somehow incorrectly functioning?

- on your church website you claim to be non-religious yet include a Christian tract with the chemicals. Why?

- Are you deliberately using the guise of a church to legitimize your methods and products?

- Are you aware that even low doses of your product in line with early stage protocol would be exceeding what the UK government deem a safe level of CD in water? (3000 x more than the maximum level here)?

- are you aware that in your videos the 'signs' that your product is working (sickness, diarrhea, fever) are also signs of toxic poisoning?

I feel as if you are trying to make an interview and or investigation of some sort.  We haven't agreed to an interview and will not anyways, as I see you have an agenda to meet.    You may consider whatever you like, that means but dung to us.  Have you ever given the Church Sacraments a try?  Or are you just another one of the medical nazis?

Non- religious means we are not a one set religion. This Church is made to help mankind, what you choose to worship is up to you.    I am a Bible believer and in my Church I will express the love of God and how he sent His son Jesus Christ to save the world from sin.  Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior? We have many other members who do not believe the same, but they are still part of our Church and they do also express their personal beliefs.

And for you to say we dont have evidence is like a slap in the face.  So the people who have had their lives changed for the good and gave a video testimony out of gratitude, that doesnt count for you? He did a good job telling you the Truth. I do want to say is Why are you allowing your children to be injected with these poisons that are destroying these poor children's health? Are you not checking 0out what is inside these drugs? You and your husband are not doing your due diligence and  your children are the ones being vaccine damaged! That is what you should investigate if you are an investigator! we will not stop until ALL the vaccines are stopped because they NEVER have worked and the FDA, EPA, DOJ, CDC and yes the corrupt "trading standards" that work for the Big Pharma and the lying British Govt. that are ONLY whores of the Rothschilds! You are believing a lie wake up!

      In this short video you’ll see a visual demonstration of reactions occurring in your body as you are exposed to pollen and other protein allergens. Seasonal allergies cause a number of symptoms, including sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, watery and itchy eyes and itching in your nose, mouth or throat. These are your body's reactions to foreign particles (allergens). The first time your body is exposed to an allergen, your plasma cells release immunoglobulin (IGE), an antibody design specific to an allergen.

The IGE attaches to the surface of mast cells found in surface tissue, such as your skin and nasal mucosa. Mast cells release a number of important cell mediators, one of which is histamine helping to mediate an inflammatory response.

The second time you encounter a particular allergen, your mast cells are activated and release a powerful combination of histamines, leukotrienes and prostaglandins, triggering a cascade of symptoms you associate with allergies. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) explains:5

"One of the marvels of the human body is that it can defend itself against harmful invaders such as viruses or bacteria. In some people, the body reacts to harmless substances such as dust, mold or pollen by producing an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE).

When patients with one of the allergic diseases (such as rhinitis or asthma) are exposed to these substances, the immune system then rallies its defenses, launching a host of complex chemical weapons to attack and destroy the supposed enemy.

In the process, some unpleasant and, in extreme cases, life-threatening symptoms may be experienced … An allergic reaction may occur anywhere in the body, but usually appears in the skin, eyes, lining of the stomach, nose, sinuses, throat and lungs — places where special immune system cells are stationed to fight off invaders that are inhaled, swallowed or come in contact with the skin."

That might be the case BUT what if…..?

What if what? Well, let’s look at this from another angle. What if the so-called “allergens” were covered in toxins and that is what the body is reacting to and not something naturally occurring that hasn’t bothered people for thousands of years until the last, let’s say 200 years. Is that possible? Could the chemicals being sprayed in the air daily ALL over the world be what is causing so many “allergies”? Or is the FACT that the majority of the world’s children are being ritualistically poisoned by chemicals in their “mandatory” vaccine programs and damaging many, if not all to some extent, by causing the body to react to “allergens” that it would not necessarily be a problem. Why? Because it is naturally occurring that’s why!

Case in point: Raw Milk  We see people with “lactose intolerance” drinking raw milk and seeing their “intolerance” go away. Why?

The “intolerance to lactose” was nothing more than drinking or eating POISON PASTEURIZED dairy that the body was rejecting!

Is Roundup the Cause of 'Gluten Intolerance'?

A compelling new peer-reviewed report from two U.S. scientists argues that increased use of Monsanto’s glyphosate herbicide (trade name Roundup) could be the cause of the epidemic of symptoms labeled as “gluten intolerance.”

Increased use of Monsanto’s glyphosate herbicide (trade name Roundup) could be the cause of the epidemic of  “gluten intolerance”, according to a compelling new peer-reviewed report from two U.S. scientists. Farmers are now using glyphosate not only to control weeds but also to dry down wheat, rice, sugarcane and other crops just before harvest, resulting in higher residues in the foods we eat. The abstract from the paper "Glyphosate, Pathways to Modern Diseases II: Celiac Sprue and Gluten Intolerance" is below.  You can read the full report here and view graphs in the Slideshow connecting increased use of glyphosate with growing rates of celiac incidence, deaths from intestinal infections, acute kidney disease and deaths due to Parkinson’s.    

Celiac disease, and more generally, gluten intolerance, is a growing problem worldwide, but especially in North America and Europe, where an estimated 5 percent of the population now suffers from it. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, macrocytic anemia and depression. It is a multifactorial disease associated with numerous nutritional deficiencies as well as reproductive issues and increased risk to thyroid disease, kidney failure and cancer. Here, we propose that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup, is the most important causal factor of this epidemic. Fish exposed to glyphosate develop digestive problems that are reminiscent of celiac disease. Celiac disease is associated with imbalances of gut bacteria that can be fully explained by the known effects of glyphosate on gut bacteria. Characteristics of celiac disease point to impairment in many cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are involved with detoxifying environmental toxins, activating vitamin D3, catabolizing vitamin A, and maintaining bile acid production and sulfate supplies to the gut. Glyphosate is known to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes. Deficiencies in iron, cobalt, molybdenum, copper and other rare metals associated with celiac disease can be attributed to glyphosate’s strong ability to chelate these elements. Deficiencies in tryptophan, tyrosine, methionine, and selenomethionine associated with celiac disease match glyphosate’s known depletion of these amino acids. Celiac disease patients have an increased risk to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which has been implicated in glyphosate exposure. Glyphosate residues in wheat and other crops are likely increasing recently due to the growing practice of crop desiccation just prior to harvest. We argue that the practice of “ripening” sugar cane with glyphosate may explain the recent surge in kidney failure among agricultural workers in Central America. We conclude with a plea to governments to reconsider policies regarding the safety of glyphosate residues in foods.

Vaccines and the Peanut Allergy Epidemic

Have you ever wondered why so many kids these days are allergic to peanuts? Where did this allergy come from all of a sudden?

Before 1900, reactions to peanuts were unheard of. Today almost a 1.5 million children in this country are allergic to peanuts.

What happened? Why is everybody buying EpiPens now?

Looking at all the problems with vaccines during the past decade, [2] just a superficial awareness is enough to raise the suspicion that vaccines might have some role in the appearance of any novel allergy among children.

But reactions to peanuts are not just another allergy. Peanut allergy has suddenly emerged as the #1 cause of death from food reactions, being in a category of allergens able to cause anaphylaxis. This condition brings the risk of asthma attack, shock, respiratory failure, and even death. Primarily among children.

Sources cited in Heather Fraser’s 2011 book The Peanut Allergy Epidemic suggest a vaccine connection much more specifically. We learn that a class of vaccine adjuvants – excipients – is a likely suspect in what may accurately be termed an epidemic. [1]

But let’s back up a little. We have to look at both vaccines and antibiotics in recent history, and the physical changes the ingredients in these brand new medicines introduced into the blood of children.


Before 1900, anaphylactic shock was virtually unknown. The syndrome of sudden fainting, respiratory distress, convulsions, and sometimes death did not exist until vaccinators switched from the lancet to the hypodermic needle. That transformation was essentially complete by the turn of the century in the western world.

Right at that time, a new disease called Serum Sickness began to afflict thousands of children. A variety of symptoms, including shock, fainting, and sometimes death, could suddenly result following an injection.

Instead of covering it up, the connection was well recognized and documented in the medical literature of the day. Dr Clemens Von Pirquet, who actually coined the word “allergy,” was a leading researcher in characterizing the new disease. [5] Serum Sickness was the first mass allergenic phenomenon in history. What had been required for its onset, apparently, was the advent of the hypodermic needle.

When the needle replaced the lancet in the late 1800s, Serum Sickness soon became a frequent visitor to the child’s bed. It was a known consequence of vaccinations. Indeed, the entire field of modern allergy has evolved from the early study of Serum Sickness coming from vaccines.




Von Pirquet recognized that vaccines had 2 primary effects: immunity and hypersensitivity. [5] He said they were inseparable: the one was the price of the other.

In other words, if we were going to benefit from the effects of mass immunization, we must accept the downside of mass hypersensitivity as a necessary co-feature. Modern medicine has decided that this double effect should be kept secret, so they don’t allow it to be brought up much.

Many doctors in the early 1900s were dead set against vaccines for this precise reason. The advertised benefit was not proven to be worth the risk. Doctors like Walter Hadwen MD, Wm. Howard Hay, and Alfred Russell Wallace saw how smallpox vaccines had actually increased the incidence of smallpox. [2,3] Wallace was one of the principal epidemiologists of the age, and his charts showing the increase in smallpox death from vaccination are unassailable – meticulous primary sources.

Another landmark researcher of the early 1900s was Dr Charles Richet, the one who coined the term anaphylaxis. [4] Richet focused on the reactions that some people seemed to have to certain foods. He found that with food allergies, the reaction came on as the result of intact proteins in the food having bypassed the digestive system and making their way intact into the blood, via leaky gut.

Foreign protein in the blood, of course, is a universal trigger for allergic reaction, not just in man but in all animals. [6]

But Richet noted that in the severe cases, food anaphylaxis did not happen just by eating a food. That would simply be food poisoning.

Food anaphylaxis is altogether different. This sudden, violent reaction requires an initial sensitization involving injection of some sort, followed by a later ingestion of the sensitized food. Get the shot, then later eat the food.

The initial exposure creates the hypersensitivity. The second exposure would be the violent, perhaps fatal, physical event.

Richet’s early work around 1900 was primarily with eggs, meat, milk and diphtheria proteins. Not peanuts. The value of Richet’s research with reactive foods was to teach us the sequence of allergic sensitivity leading to anaphylaxis, how that had to take place.

Soon other doctors began to notice striking similarities between food reactions and the serum sickness that was associated with vaccines. Same exact clinical presentation.


Next up was penicillin, which became popular in the 1940s. It was soon found that additives called excipients were necessary to prolong the effect of the antibiotic injected into the body. The excipients would act as carrier molecules. Without excipients, the penicillin would only last about 2 hours. Refined oils worked best, acting as time-release capsules for the antibiotic.

Peanut oil became the favorite, because it worked well, and was available and inexpensive.

Allergy to penicillin became common, and was immediately recognized as a sensitivity to the excipient oils. To the present day, that’s why they always ask if you’re allergic to penicillin. The allergy is a sensitivity to the excipients.

By 1953 as many as 12% of the population was allergic to penicillin. [1] But considering the upside with life-threatening bacterial infections, it was still a good deal – a worthwhile risk.

By 1950 antibiotics were being given out like M&Ms. Soldiers, children, anybody with any illness, not just bacterial. Despite Alexander Fleming’s severe warnings against prophylactic antibiotics, antibiotics were given indiscriminately as the new wonder drug. Just in case anything. [7] Only then, in the 1950s, did peanut allergy begin to occur, even though Americans had been eating peanuts for well over a century.

Remember – just eating peanuts cannot cause peanut allergy. Except if they are allowed to become moldy of course, in which case aflatoxins are released. But that’s really not a peanut allergy.

When peanut allergy did appear, the numbers of cases were fairly small and initially it wasn’t even considered worthy of study.




The big change came with vaccines. Peanut oils were introduced as vaccine excipients in the mid 1960s. An article appeared in the NY Times on 18 Sept, 1964 that would never be printed today. [8] The author described how a newly patented ingredient containing peanut oil was added as an adjuvant to a new flu vaccine, in order to prolong the “immunity.” The oil was reported to act as a time release capsule, and theoretically enhanced the vaccine’s strength. Same mechanism as with penicillin.

That new excipient, though not approved in the US, became the model for subsequent vaccines. ([1] p 103)

By 1980 peanut oil had become the preferred excipient in vaccines, even though the dangers were well documented. [9] It was considered an adjuvant – a substance able to increase reactivity to the vaccine. This reinforced the Adjuvant Myth: the illusion that immune response is the same as immunity [2].

The pretense here is that the stronger the allergic response to the vaccine, the greater will be the immunity that is conferred. This fundamental error is consistent throughout vaccine literature of the past century.

Historically, researchers who challenged this Commandment of vaccine mythology did not advance their careers.




The first study of peanut allergies was not undertaken until 1973. It was a study of peanut excipients in vaccines. Soon afterwards, and as a result of the attention from that study, manufacturers were no longer required to disclose all the ingredients in vaccines.

What is listed in the Physicians Desk Reference in each vaccine section is not the full formula. Same with the inserts. Suddenly after 1973, that detailed information was proprietary: the manufacturers knew it must be protected. Intellectual property. So now they only were required to describe the formula in general.

Why was peanut allergy so violent? Adjuvant pioneer Maurice Hilleman claimed peanut oil adjuvants had all protein removed by refining. [9] The FDA disagreed. They said some peanut protein traces would always persist [10]- that even the most refined peanut oils still contained some traces of intact peanut proteins. This was the reason doctors were directed to inject vaccines intramuscular rather than intravenous – a greater chance of absorption of intact proteins, less chance of reaction.

But all their secret research obviously wasn’t enough to prevent sensitivity. Mother Nature bats last: no intact proteins in the body. 60 million years of Natural Selection didn’t create the mammalian immune system for nothing. Put intact proteins, peanut or whatever, for any imagined reason into the human system and the inflammatory response will fire. And since the goal of oil emulsion adjuvants was to prolong reactivity in the first place – the notion of time-release – this led to sensitization.


Although peanut allergies became fairly common during the 1980s, it wasn’t until the early 1990s when there was a sudden surge of children reacting to peanuts – the true epidemic appeared. What changed? The Mandated Schedule of vaccines for children doubled from the 80s to the 90s:

1980 – 20 vaccines
1995 – 40 vaccines
2011 – 68 vaccines

It would be imprudent enough to feed peanuts to a newborn, since the digestive system is largely unformed. But this is much worse – injecting intact proteins directly into the infant’s body. In 36 vaccines before the age of 18 months.

A new kind of anaphylaxis appeared with peanut reactions: reverse anaphylaxis. (p 172, [1]) The reaction was not only to the sensitizing antigen, but to the weird new antibodies that had just been introduced in the human species by the new antigen. Without the usual benefit of the evolutionary process.

As vaccines doubled between the 1980s and the 1990s, hundreds of thousands of kids were now exhibiting peanut sensitivities, with frequent cases of anaphylaxis reactions, sometimes fatal.

But nobody talked about it.

Following the next enormous increase in vaccines on the Mandated Schedule after 9/11, whereby the total shot up to 68 recommended vaccines, the peanut allergy soon reached epidemic proportions: a million children: 1.5% of them. These numbers fit the true definition of epidemic even though that word has never been used in mainstream literature with respect to peanut allergy, except in Fraser’s odd little book.

Many researchers, not just Heather Fraser, could see very clearly that

But with the newfound research, the medical profession will do what they always must do – bury it. Protect the companies. So no money will be ever allocated from NIH to study the obvious connection between vaccine excipients and peanut allergy. That cannot happen, primarily because it would require a control group – an unvaccinated population. And that is the Unspoken Forbidden.

Same line of reasoning that has prevented Wakefield’s work from ever being replicated in a mainstream US clinical study. No unvaccinated populations. Which actually means no studies whose outcome could possibly implicate vaccines as a source of disease or immunosuppression. Vaccines as a cause of an allergy epidemic? Impossible. Let’s definitely not study it.

Instead let’s spend the next 20 years looking for the Genetic Link to the childhood peanut allergy epidemic…

In such a flawed system, any pretense of true clinical science is revealed as fatally handicapped of course: we are looking for the truth, wherever our studies shall take us, except for this, and this, and oh yes, this.

Evidence for the connection between peanut excipients and vaccines is largely indirect today, because of the circling of the wagons by the manufacturers. It is very difficult to find peanut excipients listed in the inserts and PDR listings of vaccines. Simple liability.


So in addition to all the other problems with vaccines delineated in ourtext, now we have a new one – peanut oil excipients. Which all by themselves can cause severe, even fatal, episodes of shock, as well as chronic allergy – irrespective of the mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, and the attenuated pathogens which the manufacturers do admit to.

Quite a toxic burden to saddle the unprotected newborn with. No wonder the US Supreme Court refers to vaccines as “unavoidably unsafe.”

Childhood allergies doubled between 1980 and 2000 and have doubled again since that time. [11] Theories abound. Childhood vaccines doubled at the same time. Why is there a virtual blackout of viable discussion about this glaring fact?

The epidemic of peanut allergy is just one facet of this much broader social phenomenon. We have the sickest, most allergic kids of any country, industrialized or not, on Earth. A study of the standard literature of vaccines is identical to a study of the history of adjuvants – an exercise in cover-up and dissimulation. Unvaccinated children don’t become autistic. And they don’t go into shock from eating peanuts.

But there can never be a formal clinical study where the control group is unvaccinated. NIH would never do that. They cannot. They know the outcome.

Allergies vs. Intolerances


If you tell someone that you’re “lactose-intolerant,” one of the first questions is likely to be, “so…you’re allergic to milk?” But while an allergy and an intolerance both make you feel sick, they’re actually two completely different biological issues.

An allergy is a problem caused when IgE antibodies in your immune system mistakenly think that a harmless substance (like pollen or cat hair) is actually dangerous. Trying to defend your body, these IgE antibodies trigger the release of histamine, which provokes an inflammatory response to get rid of the “threat.” You sneeze when you have a cold because your body is trying to get rid of the germs; you sneeze when you have an allergy because your body thinks cat dander is a kind of germ. Sometimes, this response is nothing but an inconvenience: hayfever isn’t fun, but it’s also not a serious problem. On the other hand, some allergies cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis – peanut allergies are so notoriously severe that several schools have banned peanuts altogether.

While allergies are all biologically similar, intolerances have a much greater variety of causes. In general, allergies are problems with the immune system, while intolerances are problems with the digestive system, but the term “intolerance” is really more of a catch-all label. If a food makes you sick, but you don’t have the specific IgE allergic response, it’s probably an intolerance. Lack of certain enzymes can cause a food intolerance, as is the case with lactose intolerance (caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase). Mabasorption in the gut, immune problems that don’t have to do with IgE antibodies, or metabolic disorders like diabetes are also common culprits.

Other medical conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) can provoke a reaction to a wide variety of foods. One common problem that many people with IBS suffer from is FODMAPs intolerance. FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols) are small carbohydrates that are not completely absorbed in the small intestine, and are easily and quickly fermented by the gut flora. This can cause bloating, gas, and abdominal pain – if you have SIBO as well, the excess gut flora will only make the symptoms worse.

Food Toxins

Allergies and intolerances cause you to have a reaction to a food that isn’t necessarily dangerous for everyone. Someone with an egg white allergy, for example, cannot eat eggs because of their particular allergy, not because eggs are inherently unsafe for people to eat. Food toxins, on the other hand, are substances that are harmful to everyone. Basically, toxins are substances that all humans are intolerant to, just because of the way our digestive systems function.  

Toxins end up in ordinarily harmless food from the environment: pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and other chemicals can leak into the food and water supply all too easily.


These Common Chemicals Trigger Allergies

Scientists are learning that chemicals you encounter every day can interfere with your immune system, leading to allergies and other problems.

Something to sneeze at: People with higher levels of certain chemicals in their bodies are more likely to have allergies.

Sneezing a bit more than you used to? Are you one of those people who "always gets sick"? It may have something to do with your toothpaste. A recent study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that common chemicals such as triclosan, an antibacterial chemical used in toothpastes and other personal-care products, and bisphenol-A (BPA), used in plastics and the linings of food cans, could be interfering with our immune systems.

Knowing that BPA and triclosan both interfere with the endocrine system and act like estrogen in the body, the authors suspected that because estrogen protects immune cells, the chemicals could have some impact on the health of the immune system. Previous laboratory studies have also shown that BPA and triclosan, along with a few other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, increase production of cells that lead to allergy development.

The authors used data from the 2003 to 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, surveys conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that measure the levels of chemicals and various health markers in a representative sampling of the U.S. public. The researchers compared levels of BPA and triclosan in roughly 5,000 participants' urine samples with two markers of immune-system health: a professional diagnosis of allergies or hayfever and levels of antibodies for cytomegalovirus, a common virus that most people contract at a very young age and that stays in our bodies for the rest of our lives. "Controlling this virus becomes a top priority for immune system, and high antibody levels signal that the immune system is less effective at controlling it," says Erin Rees Clayton, PhD, research investigator at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and one of the study's coauthors.

Triclosan was significantly associated with allergies and hayfever, their analysis showed. That finding supports the "hygiene hypothesis," or the idea that the more we try to sanitize our homes and our environments, the less able our immune systems are to defend us against common "invaders" like allergens and pollen. Although BPA wasn't found to have an impact on allergies, it did seem to affect those cytomegalovirus antibodies. Adults over 18 who had higher levels of BPA also had higher levels of antibodies, suggesting that their immune systems weren't functioning as well as they should be.

Scrubbing yourself clean with triclosan-saturated antibacterial soap may be a bad deal for your immune system. And so might BPA, which lurks in canned-food linings and cash-register receipts, among other places.

"Hygiene clearly has very important benefits for protecting ourselves from infection," says Clayton. "But some of the chemicals in cleaning products and hygiene products may have more risks than benefits." How these chemicals actually interfere with the immune system is unclear, Clayton says. But one thing her results do suggest "is that the timing of exposure to BPA and perhaps the length of time someone's exposed may be affecting immune-system response." So older adults who've been exposed to BPA their entire lives are more likely to suffer immune problems than younger kids are (but at the same time, BPA has other effects on small children, including behavioral problems, so parents should avoid exposing children to it as much as possible).

The good news about triclosan (the active ingredient in antibacterial products) is that once you stop using products containing it, the levels in your body drop relatively quickly. BPA isn't quite so easy to avoid. The World Health Organization recently declared food as our primary source of exposure to BPA, but a study published last year found that people who'd fasted for 24 hours still had somewhat high levels of BPA in their bodies. It's presumed that we excrete BPA within six or so hours of consuming it, so those results suggest that it either isn't excreted as quickly as thought, or that we're constantly being exposed to the chemical through other nonfood sources, such as ATM and cash-register receipts and the flame retardants used in mattresses and furniture.

To avoid BPA, limit your consumption of canned foods, don't microwave in plastic containers (BPA is a component of some plastics), and avoid other known exposure sources, such as receipts. Decline receipts at the ATM, gas stations, and any other retail outlet that gives you the choice. When you do get a receipt, store it in a separate envelope, rather than in your wallet.

To avoid triclosan, avoid all products labeled "antibacterial" or "antimicrobial." The chemical is listed as an active ingredient in all personal-care products in which it's used. But triclosan is also added to household goods as diverse as cutting boards and garden hoses. Keep an eye out for terms like "Microban" or "Biofresh" as both are trade names for triclosan.
