            Something called Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) is being touted by an online 'church' as a cure-all for many diseases, including cancer, HIV/AIDS and autism. (the fifth estate)

Health Canada says it has opened a case to see whether a U.S.-based "church" group violated the Food and Drugs Act in the sale, distribution or marketing of MMS, a so-called miracle mineral solution, during a recent meeting in Calgary.

The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing met at a downtown Calgary hotel in March, but organizers declined to speak to CBC News about the meeting or whether MMS was being sold or given to delegates who paid $350 US to attend the two-day session last month. 

The online agenda for the meeting said doses of MMS might be handed out.

"We just might surprise everyone every so often with a dose of MMS1. Be ready!" read the itinerary.

Mark Grenon, a self-described archbishop with the church, spoke at the Calgary meeting in front of a dozen people.

His son, Jonathan, who described himself as a bishop with the church, refused to answer questions related to the session and whether MMS was being offered for sale.

"We don't sell anything," said Jonathan Grenon. 

An edited version of the exchange between CBC News and Grenon was posted on the Genesis II YouTube channel last month.

"We're going to continue with our service right now, we're going to stop this because this is not an interview," Jonathan Grenon told the CBC on March 17.

A message from Grenon posted to the church's website claimed a "package of sacraments" would be included for seminar participants, including "MMS, Activator, MMS2, DMSO, spray bottle, capsules, etc."

Health Canada has been warning Canadians about the dangers of MMS for years. 

The federal agency says the product sold as Miracle Mineral Solution may pose serious health risks because it contains sodium chlorite, a bleach-like chemical. MMS is being promoted as a treatment for a range of health ailments, including cancer.

Since the ​March 17, 2018 meeting, Health Canada said it has opened a case "to verify compliance [of the Food and Drugs Act] and will take action to address any confirmed non-compliance." 

"​MMS is a drug that has not been approved for sale by Health Canada. Therefore, it is illegal to advertise, sell or distribute this product in Canada, whether or not payment is provided for the product," said Health Canada in an email to CBC News.  

In an email to CBC News, Grenon said: "Well, Health Canada can act like they are going to do something. But they will do nothing!!!"

"As a Church, we are totally separate and do not have to give account to any so called 'health agency,'" he added.

"So, for you to make this statement of "health Canada" or whatever so called "health agency," it means nothing but dung to us," said Grenon.

Health Canada charged Stanley Nowak of Riondel, B.C., and Sara Nowak of Okotoks, Alta., last fall under the Food and Drugs Act with 29 counts related to the sale, packaging and advertising of sodium chlorite, one of the ingredients of MMS.

A trial has been scheduled for October in British Columbia.

None of the allegations against the Nowaks has been proven in court.  

Health Canada says MMS is sometimes promoted under different names, including Miracle Mineral Supplement, Master Mineral Solution, or its ingredient, sodium chlorite.

The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, which describes itself as a non-religious church, touts diluted sodium chlorite as a cure-all for a range of conditions and diseases including AIDS, autism, cancer, lyme disease, malaria and herpes.

The Genesis II Church was founded by an American named Jim Humble, who claims he is a billion-year-old god from the Andromeda galaxy.

How important is nutrition?

            Nutrition is the most important science on earth in REGARD to the body’s health and IF it controls the health of the body then to each one of us it is essential! Nutrition is a process. The first step of this process called nutrition has to do with what is being allowed in the body. Not everything that is allowed in the body is nutritious. So, the only things that can aid the nutrition process are things that the body was designed to gain nutrition from since the world began.

            I think all will agree that artificial and synthetically made foods, medicines, supplements, and other non-foods being consumed and allowed into the body today. This is something that has occurred within the last 200 years at most but has grown exponentially in the last 100 years and in the last 50 has caused all kinds of health issues.

We need nutrition for our bodies to battle the toxic on slot against our health and to thrive and be in balance i.e. homeostasis. But, do we NEED nutritional supplements? Can these “nutritional” supplements help or even hurt the body’s health? Are these nutritional supplements really what the makers say they are? Do you understand what vitamins and minerals are? How do vitamins really “work” in the body? Is it important for a supplement to be organic? Are synthetic and artificial supplements just as good as food in food and occuring naturally? Where do I find REAL nutrition?

I hope to answer these questions for you all and OPEN your eyes to the TRUTH about “nutritional supplements”.

What Is the Definition of Nutrition?

What is the definition of nutrition? Nutrition is the sum total of the processes involved in the taking in and the utilization of food substances by which growth, repair and maintenance of the body are accomplished. It involves ingestion, digestion, absorption and assimilation. Nutrients are stored by the body in various forms and drawn upon when the food intake is not sufficient.

I have read and still read the great philosophers, going back to the Greeks .... but I was appalled when I realized that those truly great men of those times seemed to know virtually nothing about nutrition. How could this happen? Why was nutrition ignored? That is the greatest puzzle of all time, as far as I am concerned.

You may say that wild animals don't know anything about nutrition and they do all right. Well, the important thing here is that animals know what to eat and drink by instinct .... while man long ago lost his powers of instinct. Thus, man needs nutritional knowledge and an animal doesn't.

Where will we get our nutritional knowledge? Man knows about science and about a thousand and one other things but about nutrition he knows virtually nothing. That happens to be one of the sciences about which man is blissfully ignorant .... even though his welfare, existence, health and life itself depend upon it. How did this 'boner' happen or come about? Ah, that is the burning question and I'm afraid Tobe cannot give you the answer.

I have diligently searched for information on the study of nutrition and I am thunderstruck to learn that in America the study of nutrition at the university and research level only began in 1894, by a scientist named Atwater. Its progress since that time has moved forward at what I would call a snail's pace. Yes, while there are millions of dollars available for research, little, if any, finds its way into the universities to study nutrition. Speaking with logic and a clear bright eye on the truth, nutrition is virtually a no man's land among the intelligensia.

Foundations and those who control endowment money won't contribute a cent to the study of nutrition. All universities get huge sums of money, running into the millions or tens or hundreds of millions of dollars .... but not a cent for the study of nutrition. Don't be surprised at this. Accept it .... because it is true. Besides, it makes good sense.

Most doctors refuse to study nutrition even as a minor course and if you look at the matter in a fair-minded manner, you cannot blame them. A medical doctor doesn't want to spend four or five years at high school and about ten more years earning a medical degree, just to teach people what to eat and drink so they can remain healthy and stay away from doctors. Let's be realistic — nutrition is the most important science on earth, yet it is the most unwanted by some segments of our economic structure.

A busy medical physician in any one of the major cities in either Canada or the United States would earn at least 50  to 100 thousand annually. Yes, and according to the newspapers, many earn from 250 to 400 thousand. Do you think they would entertain the idea of allowing nutrition to louse up that kind of money? Besides, these selfsame big, big money earners have the means and the clout to keep nutrition down in the dumps for at least another 50 years .... unless man suddenly rises up from his long, long sleep. However, the chances are he'll never wake up if they keep dousing him with valium and hundreds of other somniferous, mind boggling drugs.

There is a chance that man may yet gain some knowledge about nutrition, but it must happen elsewhere than in America. I do hope that there will emerge some means whereby the study of nutrition will go forward at a full task force pace.

Something that puzzles me is why the Soviet Union hasn't done some worthwhile work on the subject of nutrition. I don't know but maybe it is due to the fact that in the U.S.S.R. there is not so much sickness. Further, they probably see no reason why they should pull our chestnuts out of the fire. I contend that in no way would the U.S.S.R. help save the lives of Americans for, remember, Khruschev told the American people, "We'll bury you!" Well, by the looks of things it could be that Khruschev might have been more right than anyone ever suspected. However, the American people are doing it themselves .... actually, committing genocide.

No dollar-oriented society could possibly undertake the whole-hearted serious study of nutrition and I'm afraid that the powers with the most money will do their best to block or delay any nutritional gains or leaps forward. If you think I am over-reacting, let me assure you that I am being most sombre and calm and I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, exaggerating.

You may well ask why there is so much confusion about nutrition. Well, that's not hard to fathom if you take time to investigate the situation a little. When some good nutritionist or scientist comes up with an important health-contributing bit of scientific knowledge that does or can do harm to the drug, food, beverage and other big profit-making industries, these industries immediately hire the best nutritional research scientists that money can buy and in no time flat they come up with evidence that refutes the findings that could do umbrage to their products. That's how the nutritional ball game is played and that is why there is so much confusion in the ranks.

For over 20 years I have been researching researchers and, to my dismay, I have learned that even 50 and 100 years ago much of the research was rigged. You see, researchers needed money to carry on their work in those days, too, and it has always been that the man who pays the piper calls the tune.

Can we ever hope to change these abominable circumstances? Are there no honest research scientists'? Is there no one who will truly work and strive for the health and welfare of mankind? I am doing my best in the only way I know how — with my pen!

I know, you know and, yes, we all know that there are honest men among our scientists, but the big money is only available to those whose principles bear a price tag and we must all realize that today money is the name of the game.

However, we must be logical and recognize that the study of the science of nutrition has been set back drastically because big business has a tight rein on science and I am realistic enough to know there is not a thing we can do about it.

I contend that millions have had their life-spans shortened and millions more will have to pay the supreme penalty before America will wake up and sweep the morass aside .... but don't hold your breath in expectation. No, man's inhumanity to man has not yet reached the end of its tether.

I predict that the cancer rate will rise higher and higher and that before the year 2,000 it will be responsible for more than 50% of the total deaths. Then maybe the perpetrators of this mass genocide will come to their senses and finally realize that life is more important than money .... but the monsters they create may destroy them, too! I write this with a heavy heart, yet everything I say is true.

Members of the medical profession are partly responsible, too ... not because they created the predicament but because they knew what was going on and did not raise their voices to correct the situation. Yes, and they did even more than that because they harassed, persecuted and plagued their colleagues who did speak out.

Strange to relate, it is difficult, if not impossible to know who are your friends and who are your enemies. Even I, who am continually in touch with the situation, do not know for sure who's who and what's what.

Let's face it, the medical profession in one way or another controls practically every health research dollar spent in the world, including those spent by the American Cancer Society and their affiliates. Now do you think they would suggest or even allow a research project using raw food as a control or cure for cancer? Surely you are joking if you say you think they would. The members of the medical profession don't want to go back to hard days like those of the dirty thirties when they had to resort to various nefarious practices to make a buck.

Of course, I recognize the rhyme and the reason for this reluctance on the part of the medical profession but, on the other hand, it isn't their money. Most of it is public money or endowment funds but the medical fraternity has control of it, due to government appointments or their being elected to the boards of various institutions. For some inexplicable reason the public seems to feel that doctors are the people to make these decisions. Whatever the reason, that's the way it's done and that is why the raw juice and raw food diet has never been truly studied so that the world might learn the truth about the merits of raw food.

Now without money for research how can we ever conduct experiments to prove to the world that raw juices and raw food can prevent and clear up most illnesses and diseases, including cancer?



What is Nutrition?


Nutrition is the study of how food and drink affects our bodies with a special regard to the essential nutrients necessary to support human health. It looks at the physiological and biochemical processes involved in nourishment and how substances in food provide energy or are converted into body tissues. These nutrients which are the source of energy for our bodies are classed as: carbohydrates, fats, fibre, minerals, proteins, vitamins, and water. Good nutrition means obtaining the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. An important part of the study of nutrition is looking at the diseases that can result from malnutrition and the role food plays in the development of chronic disease.

Poor nutrition can lead to a lack of energy, digestive problems, food allergies, weight gain, depression and anxiety as well as many of today’s most prevalent chronic diseases like coronary heart disease, cancer, ADHA. Having nutritional knowledge and making informed choices about the foods you eat can help you achieve optimum health over your lifetime.


6 Essential Nutrients and Their Functions

An essential nutrient is a nutrient that the body cannot synthesize on its own -- or not to an adequate amount -- and must be provided by the diet. These nutrients are necessary for the body to function properly. The six essential nutrients include carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water.


Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the brain. Without carbohydrates, the body could not function properly. Sources include fruits, breads and grains, starchy vegetables and sugars. Make at least half of the grains you consume whole grains. Whole grains and fruit are full of fiber, which reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and helps maintain normal blood glucose levels.

2. Protein

Protein is the major structural component of cells and is responsible for the building and repair of body tissues. Protein is broken down into amino acids, which are building blocks of protein. Nine of the 20 amino acids, known as essential amino acids, must be provided in the diet as they cannot be synthesized in the body. Ten to 35 percent of your daily calories should come from lean protein sources such as low-fat meat, dairy, beans or eggs.

3. Fat

Fat is an energy source that when consumed, increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E and K. Twenty to 35 percent of your daily intake should come from fat. Choose healthy options such as omega-3-rich foods like fish, walnuts and vegetable-based oils. Omega-3s help with development and growth. Limit intake of saturated fats such as high-fat meats and full-fat dairy. Other smart choices include nuts, seeds and avocado.

4. Vitamins

Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which provides structure to blood vessels, bone and ligaments. Rich sources include citrus fruits, strawberries and peppers. Folate, found in foods, helps to prevent birth defects. Pregnant women or women who plan to become pregnant should speak with their physician about taking a folic acid supplement, the synthetic form of folate, in addition to their diet. Vitamin D helps to maintain calcium homeostasis. It can be found in food sources or synthesized by the sun.

5. Minerals

Sodium helps to maintain fluid volume outside of the cells and helps cells to function normally. Keep intake under 2,400 milligrams per day. Potassium maintains fluid volume inside and outside of cells and prevents the excess rise of blood pressure with increased sodium intake. Rich sources include bananas, potatoes and tomatoes. Calcium helps to maintain and build strong bones and teeth. Include three servings of calcium-rich foods per day including milk, low-fat cheese and yogurt.


Water helps to maintain homeostasis in the body and transports nutrients to cells. Water also assists in removing waste products from the body. All beverages and high-moisture foods such as soup and watermelon contain water and count towards your daily water requirement. Adults should consume 25 to 35 milliliters of fluids per kilogram body weight or 2 to 3 liters per day.

7? Fibre


Fibre is an important component of a healthy balanced diet. We get fibre from plant-based foods, but it's not something the body can absorb. This means fibre is not a nutrient and contains no calories or vitamins. Fibre helps your digestive system to process food and absorb nutrients

It is very important to know all the requisite information on nutritional supplements before taking them. It is known that minerals and vitamins are necessary for optimal health. However, many of us just don’t know what kind of minerals and vitamins to take which creates a lot of confusion, apathy, and frustration for a lot of people. Namely, numerous companies in the world are producing multi minerals and vitamins and promoting them as necessary for good health. But, at the same time are sabotaging the health of millions of people who are unsuspecting buyers of harmful and synthetic vitamins and minerals. The fact is that most mineral and vitamin brands on the market are synthetic, i.e. made from oxide minerals and other chemical substances. These products contain harmful substances, for example: preservatives, fillers, binders, coal tar, bitumen, gelatin, waste products etc. Consequently, these products cannot be digested by the human body and therefore cannot be assimilated. Moreover, they do not have a synergism due to being industrial-made and thus cannot find their way out of the body and thus get lodged in the tissues of the body causing disease or enhancing present diseases. Multi complexes are manufactured by pharmaceutical and food companies, and are not organic which is the state all digestible foods must be in for the body to break them down in order to absorb their nutrients. For those who are unsure, this article will provide some information to determine if vitamin tablets or multi mineral complexes are food or imitations.



Nutritional supplements, and above all the vitamins and minerals, can be purchased today in supermarket or local drugstore, as well as at

health food stores. Whether the vitamins and minerals in the health food stores in some way better or were higher quality? Or it can be

assumed that the ones in the supermarket or drugstore just as good? More than 95% of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that you can buy at “health food” stores and close to 100% of those sold in other stores are now made by the same few pharmaceutical and chemical companies who supply them to most all the vitamin and mineral companies. They are no longer the nutritional supplements they once were but are, more accurately, “nutraceuticals”. In such a way, the drug companies are quietly taken over the nutrition business. Thus, for example, people tend to assume that vitamin C from one brand is pretty much the same as vitamin C from another brand. And in many cases they’re right since the vitamin C came from the same original supplier. But what most people do not realize is that these vitamins and minerals are not true and complete vitamins and minerals as would be supplied by good organically-grown whole foods. In fact, they are chemical synthetics made from such things as coal tar, petroleum products, animal by- products, ground rocks, stones, shells and metal (Thiel, 2014; Hui, 1992). And not only do they not supply the benefits of the real vitamins and minerals but they can actually be quite harmful when taken over time (Chong, 2005). Especially in the mega doses so often recommended. Real vitamins only require very minute doses to be effective. Do you sometimes ask yourself, How many people suffer from rickets or scurvy? Probably none. What about cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes? Probably a lot. The latter are all diseases that arise from having too much! Multi-vitamin won’t help much there.

For a long time, public media present us daily interesting marketing propaganda in the field of health and nutrition. There are some rather

disturbing marketing trends that are geared towards human health and their diet. Namely, print and television advertisements show

athletes, pretty girls and attractive women while nibbling candy bar that has been fortified with a bunch of synthetic vitamins and minerals, as well as a whole host of other artificial additives and preservatives. Smiling children have fortified juices, cereal bars, and even gummy candies and chewing gum. What these ad campaigns don’t show is how these products are obtained and how they are processed that foods may contain harmful ingredients like hydrogenated oils, synthetic vitamins, and neurotoxins. Specific nutrients that are shown to be beneficial in clinical studies are isolated, often in synthetic form, and heralded as new weapon against cancer, heart disease, old age, etc (Pietrzik, 1996). Even in the field of alternative health we find this same sort of reductionism going on. Herbal compounds are isolated, extracted and ingested in inappropriate quantities, without the synergy that the whole plant provides. However, there is something to be said for using plants, their fruits, and foods in their whole forms and for cultivating a relationship with the different energies offered by the natural products around us. It’s very hard to improve on a diet of wild foods and herbs. Well-nourished bodies and minds enjoy balanced hormones and hearty immune systems. Daily input of nourishing products, such as fruits and vegetables, are a wonderful way to add extra nutrients to your diet. Unlike synthetic pills, natural products provide essential nutrients in a highly assimilable form.


Real or synthetic


Multivitamins are good for preventing conditions that arise from severe deficiency, but their helpfulness seems to taper off pretty quickly when the body is in a high calorie, insulin-rich

physiological state that most people with a western diet find themselves in (Pietrzik, 1996). This isn’t meant to demonize them, but to help people understand that taking one doesn’t help

the body exert the metabolic control needed to prevent diseases of convenience. Namely, Americans are spending more than 17 billion a year on supplements for health and wellness. Strangely enough, the rates of some forms of chronic disease have not changed, while the rates of others have actually increased. There are a number of reasons for these poor statistics and many things remain a mystery. One thing seems fairly clear, however. Most supplements aren’t helping very much (Chong, 2005). They are highly complex structures that combine a variety of enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, trace elements, activators and many other unknown or undiscovered factors all working together synergistically, to enable this vitamin complex to do its job in your body. Nutrients from within this complex cannot be taken apart

or isolated from the whole, and then be expected to do the same job in the body as the whole complex is designed to do. suggests that individuals frequently exceed safe nutrient levels when they take vitamin supplements (Troppman et al., 2002).


The truth behind whole-food supplements


Namely, whole food supplements are what their name suggests. Supplements made from concentrated whole foods. The vitamins found within these supplements are not isolated. The perfect example of this difference can be understood on the example of an automobile (Chong, 2005). An automobile is a wonderfully designed complex machine that needs all of its parts to be present and in place to function properly. Wheels are certainly an important part of the whole, but you could never isolate them from the rest of the car, call them a car or expect them to function like a car. They need the engine, body and everything else. The same analogy applies to the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or vitamin E (delta tocopherol) you can find on most health food store shelves. They are parts of an entire complex that serve a purpose when part of the whole. However, they cannot do the job of the entire complex by themselves. With similar logic in place, one can analyze what a typical multivitamin truly is. The automobile equivalent of creating a multivitamin would be going to a junk yard, finding all of the separate parts you would need to make up an entire automobile, throwing them together in a heap (or capsule in terms of the multivitamin) and expecting that heap to drive like a car.

Isolated nutrients or synthetic nutrients are not natural, in that they are never found by themselves in nature. Taking these isolated nutrients, especially at the ultra-high doses found in formulas today, is more like taking a drug. Studies show the body treats these isolated and synthetic nutrients like xenobiotics (foreign substances). By the same token, food-based supplements are never treated like this by your body. For example, your urine will never turn florescent yellow, no matter how much meat (a good source of B vitamins) you eat. This sort of rapid excretion happens only with foreign substances in your body. Not only are isolated nutrients treated like drugs or other chemicals by your body. Like drugs, they can create problems for you too. Nature does not produce any nutrient in an isolated form. The nutrients in foods are blended together in a specific way and work best in that format. For an isolated nutrient to work properly in the body, it needs all the other parts that are naturally present in the food too. If the parts are not all there from the start, they are taken from the body’s stored supply. This is why isolated nutrients often work for a little while, then seem to stop working. Once your body’s store of the extra nutrients is used up, the isolated nutrient you’re taking doesn’t work as well anymore. Worse yet, a deficiency in these extra nutrients can be created in

your body. And, because most nutrients are isolated from the foods they come in - using a wide array of potentially nasty solvents and other chemicals - taking high amounts of these products can also

expose you to these potentially toxic chemicals, if care is not taken to remove them. With the burden we are already facing from the high number of chemicals in our environment, why would anyone want to add more? The various parts of a natural vitamin complex work together in a synergistic manner. Synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Nutritionist Judith De Cava (1997) puts it best: “Separating the group of compounds (in a vitamin complex) converts it from a physiological, biochemical, active micronutrient into a disabled, debilitated chemical of little or no value to living cells. The synergy is gone.”

In other words, the automobile, in its original form, will drive better than a pile of its individual parts. Most people don’t follow this logic when examining a nutritional supplement. Supplement makers typically try to stuff as much as possible in a capsule, telling us that the more we take, the better it is for us. This is simply not the case. As you now know, it is not necessarily the amount of a nutrient you ingest that is important, but its form and how much is bioavailable that counts the most. In fact, remembering that ingesting single nutrients can actually create imbalances in the body, logic would dictate the higher the level of a single nutrient that you take in, the quicker this imbalance will occur. What all of this means: The potency of a supplement has much more to do with synergy than with actual nutrient levels. It is a combined effect of all the parts of the food, rather than the chemical effect of a single part, that is most important.


Whole-food or synthetic supplements


In the previous chapter was already discussed the importance of taking natural supplements to support body and immune system. But which supplements do you take, and how do you know which supplements are the best ones? For example, Americans spend billions of dollars every year on supplements, and it’s very important to understand that not all supplements are created equal.

Sometimes, there are vast differences between products.

What is the difference between whole food supplements and synthetic supplements (isolated or fractionated supplements)?

A great example would be just to simplify look at almost any multivitamin. When you scan the nutritional content fact and ingredient label, you’ll see quite an assortment of vitamins (A, C, E, etc.). Here is a portion of a label for a common multivitamin-

multimineral supplement. For this product say that replaces key nutrients that may be depleted through the stress of intense physical activity.

Maximum formula with key ingredients (important vitamins and minerals) to keep you healthy and energized: physical energy (Cr, Fe, biotin, vitamins B 6 and B 12 ), mental energy (vitamins B 6 and B 12 , thiamin, riboflavin, niacin), natural defense and immunity (Se, Zn, vitamins C and A), stress of physical activity (Se, vitamins A,

C, and E), joints and bones (Ca, Mg, Zn, vitamins A, C, and D).

Namely, there are a lot of vitamins listed on this label. Look at the items listed under“Ingredients”. Those are “isolated” vitamins and other chemicals. There are no foods or herbal ingredients listed only partial vitamins and other chemicals. Nature intended for us to consume food in its whole form because all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes are bound together in one package and work synergistically to deliver the nutrition your body needs. Synthetic supplements give isolated or fractionated pieces of the whole. It is simply not the same, you’re not getting the full benefit nature intended. The other problem is, by taking isolated vitamins, sometimes we are getting massive doses of some vitamins, but not enough of others. This imbalance this can cause health problems too. Aren’t we trying to get healthier – rather than cause more problems?


Multivitamins and Mineral Supplements


Vitamins and minerals, and also enzymes, work closely together as co-factors for each other’s efficacy (Grujić et al., 2014). If one part

is missing, or in the wrong form or the wrong amount, entire chains of metabolic processes will not proceed normally. Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. And so on. Mineral deficiencies can cause vitamin deficiencies, and vice versa. So that is the other prime difference between whole food vitamins and synthetics: whole food

vitamins contain within them many essential trace minerals necessary for their synergistic operation. Synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals, relying on, and depleting, the body’s own mineral



Significance of natural minerals


Minerals must come from land, respectively natural foods (fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, nuts, grains). Minerals derived from natural and living substances such as food supra are organic. Minerals derived from non-living sources, i.e. metallic substances or synthetic metal salts are inorganic, i.e. non-living.

Most people are unwisely and unknowingly consuming inorganic minerals and vitamins by multi mixture products today. When using minerals for yourself you must know what to look for. A good mineral brand will list all organic sources of the minerals. These organic sources should be derived from food (fruit, plant, vegetable sources) exclusively. Any brand that lists any of the 102 minerals with a term following the mineral is synthetic.

For example, nature made calcium, but not calcium gluconate. Nature made iron, but not iron ferrous. Nature did make oxide minerals, but not for purposes of human consumption. You must remember that nature has produced two states of every mineral: organic and inorganic, or phosphate and oxide. Humans require organic or phosphate minerals. Also, nature does not give us anything mono-structured. A mono-structured element or mineral by itself or isolated (from other elements) is unstable and will sabotage your health before ultimately killing you.

For example, as humans, we need and require oxygen, but oxygen by itself and not balanced with nitrogen is a poison. Therefore, nature balanced oxygen with nitrogen. Similarly, water is required for life, but nature balanced the water with hydrogen and oxygen. Water like the air (oxygen) we breathe is balanced. Therefore, your minerals and vitamins must also be balanced. The land can convert inorganic elements (minerals) into organic elements by humic acid. Humic acid improves the absorption of all vitamins and minerals, especially those derived from organic sources.

Calcium is one of the most common supplements. Researchers have managed to finagle a study that even shows calcium supplements aren’t useful for boosting the bone density of elderly patients. People are being told that calcium is absolutely worthless if you don’t digest it and absorb it. Calcium needs to have an acidic environment in order to be broken down and assimilated by digestive system. If you don’t have acid in your stomach, then you can’t absorb the calcium. And if you don’t have vitamin D in small intestine, you can’t absorb the calcium, either. There are a lot of senior citizens out there who are spending small fortunes on calcium supplements and antacid tablets, but they’re not getting any sunshine. And that means they’re not getting enough vitamin D. With a vitamin D deficiency, they can’t even absorb the calcium. It’s either going right through their bodies or actually contributing to the buildup of calcification in their kidneys. They’ll probably end up with kidney stones.



Significance of food-based vitamins



It is known that a good diet should supply all necessary nutrients. However, the true story builds a much more complex picture. Namely,

even natural sources of vitamin A in unnatural quantities produce problems for species with particularly high susceptibility to vitamin A

toxicity, like metabolic osteopathy (Polizopoulou et al., 2005). For precursors to vitamin A, the carotenoids, as many as nine factors influence their bioavailability when ingested in food (Van

het Hof et al., 2000). The carotenoid lycopene, which lowers prostate cancer risk, illustrates the integrity of the plant substrate when carotenoids are ingested in food. Cooking improves lycopene

bioavailability because heating and homogenizing lycopene-rich tomatoes into paste disrupts the fibrous plant cell walls, releasing the lycopene for. Partnering carotenoids with certain fats maximizes their intestinal and lymphatic uptake. Humans eating salads with either fat-free or full- fat dressing demonstrated significantly different plasma levels, with those ingesting vegetables dressed in the full-fat version enjoying higheramounts of circulating carotenoids (Brown et al.,


Members of the water-soluble vitamin B class have a reputation of being safe in any amount. Nutritionists have long-advocated vitamin B9, or folate, for cancer prevention. However, a concern

erupted in the 1940s that is now receiving more attention: Too much supplementation with folic acid (the synthetic form of folate) appears to promote tumorigenesis. This springs from its role as a key cofactor in nucleotide synthesis. Large amounts of folic acid facilitate cellular

proliferation, causing growth in neoplastic foci. This finding has provoked calls in the human food-processing industry for curtailing

mandatory folic acid fortification (Mason, 2009).

The lower amounts of folate ordinarily found in food are still viewed as cancer-preventive. Many nonhuman species manufacture vitamin C.

While they rely less on dietary sources, research testing their true capacity shows it falls far short of previous assumptions. Aging hepatocytes lose some ability to synthesize and recycle vitamin

C, producing a conditionally essential status for vitamin C in geriatric dogs and cats. Health status may further influence vitamin C requirements.

A study showed that healthy dogs supplemented with vitamin C produced no improvement in antioxidative capacity or serum IgA and IgG concentrations (Hesta et al., 2009). In contrast, dogs with untreated lymphoma exhibited significant alterations in their antioxidant levels compared to healthy control dogs. After remission, dogs with lymphoma had significantly lower levels of vitamin C, raising questions about the potential need for post-chemotherapy supplementation with dietary antioxidants.

Finally, Vitamin C supplementation, along with vitamins B and E, aminocaproic acid and N-acetylcysteine, disappointingly failed to forestall deterioration in the neurological status of dogs with suspected degenerative myelopathy (Hesta et al., 2009).

In the wild, carnivores obtain vitamin D by

consuming the body fat, blood and liver of their prey; depending on the contents of homemade diets, dogs and cats may not be receiving enough vitamin D (How et al., 1994). They cannot

meet their needs simply through sun exposure, as dogs and cats lack the ability to cutaneously synthesize D3 in adequate amounts. Problems such as “rubber jaw syndrome,” or secondary

hyperparathyroidism, have arisen in young dogs. On the other hand, overnutrition with supplemented Vitamin D, calcium, and calories

in puppy diets has been linked to predisposition for canine elbow dysplasia (Janutta et al., 2008).

The situation is similar with the vitamin E. On a supplement label, natural vitamin E is listed as d-alpha-tocopherol, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate, or d-alpha tocopheryl succinate. In contrast, synthetic forms of vitamin E are labeled with a dl- prefix. There is little difference between the natural and a synthetic form of vitamin E, but natural is better (Challem, 2000). Natural vitamin E refers to eight chemically different compounds obtained from plants: four tocopherols and four trienols. Alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E, and its natural form consists of one isomer. In contrast, synthetic vitamin E (i.e. synthetic alpha- tocopherol) consists of eight stereoisomeric forms of alpha-tocopherol, with only one (about 12 % of the synthetic molecule) equal to the naturally occurring stereoisomeric form (Yu et al., 2008).

The other seven isomers range in potency from 21 to 90 % of natural d-alpha-tocopherol. This may appear to be arcane nutritional chemistry, but it is key to understanding how the body absorbs natural and synthetic supplements differently. Molecular structure determines how the body uses vitamin E. Researchers have found

that natural vitamin E assimilates far better than synthetic versions. Specific binding and transport proteins produced in the liver select the natural d-alpha form of vitamin E and largely ignore all

other forms (Traber, 1998).


Problem of synthetic vitamins


What occurs with all synthetic vitamins? If a person has in body enough reserves of the missing parts of a particular vitamin when combined with the vitamin isolate from the synthetic they will

experience some initial relief. But as soon as those reserves are used up, the synthetic will no longer work, the symptoms will return and the

person will now experience the often unpleasant effects of vitamin imbalance and deficiency. The body treats them as toxins, leading to the expensive urine” of excess vitamin intake

referred to frequently, since the human system via the urinary tract attempts to rid itself of the major quantity of such foreign chemicals (De Cava, 1997).

De Cava points out that vitamin B1, as synthetic thiamine (thiamine HCl) will initially allay fatigue but will eventually cause fatigue by the buildup of pyruvic acid. This leads to the vicious cycle of thinking more and more Thiamine is needed, resulting in more and more fatigue along with other accumulated complaints. Also, natural food-source

vitamins are enzymatically alive, and man-made synthetic vitamins are dead chemicals. True whole food vitamins don’t leech the body of their missing co-factors and don’t cause a vitamin imbalance leading to the return and increase of symptoms. True vitamins also don’t need mega doses to create their effect. A high number of milligrams is often an indication of a synthetic source.

A study in the of some 30,000 Finnish subjects showed conclusively that synthetic vitamin A had no antioxidant effect whatsoever (NEJM study group, 1994). A true antioxidant helps to protect heart muscle, lungs, and artery surfaces from breaking down prematurely. In this study, the subjects who received the synthetic beta-carotene actually had an 8% higher incidence of fatal heart attacks, strokes,

and lung cancer than those who got the placebo (sugar pill). Stands to reason: the synthetic brought no vitamin activity to the tissues that needed it. As a dead, purified chemical introduced into the body, the synthetic further stressed the immune system, the liver, and the kidneys which all had to try to break down this odd chemical and remove it from the body. It would be bad enough if they were

harmless, but synthetic vitamins actually have a net negative effect.


Identification of Synthetic Vitamins


Step 1. Search for words listed in the ingredients that begin with “dl.” When a word contains “dl” in the prefix, it is an indication that the vitamin is synthetic. As an example, “dl-alpha-tocopherol

acetate” and “dl-alpha-tocopherol” are synthetic forms of vitamin E.

Step 2. Find words that end with “ate” or “ide” in the list of ingredients. These words indicate that the manufacturer used synthetic materials for increasing the vitamin’s potency and stability. Some words to look for include nitrate, acetate, sodium ascorbate,

sodium benzoate, chloride, hydrochloride, silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide.

Step 3. Find the synthetic form of the vitamin listed under the ingredient list. Natural vitamins come from natural food sources. If you see the vitamin listed as the vitamin itself, such as “vitamin D,”

then it is sure to be the synthetic version. Look for food sources such as “citrus” instead of “vitamin C” or “parsley” instead of “vitamin K.”

Step 4. Identify the words “natural” on the vitamin

bottle. If the bottle says, “100 percent natural” the vitamin supplement does not contain synthetics. On the other hand, a label that says, “natural,” might have at least some synthetic components.

According to Earl Mindell’s, only 10 % of the product must come from natural food sources in order for a company to claim “natural” on the

product’s label. If the product label does not say “100 percent animal-based” or “100 percent plant- based,” the supplement is synthetic.

Step 5. Look for the vitamin potency listed on the product’s label. According to the Organic Consumers Association, if the vitamin supplement has a high or otherwise unnatural potency, the

product is synthetic. For example, a product that provides 1,000 percent of vitamin C is unusually high. This is ten times the amount you need daily, and an amount that even a healthy diet - consisting

of natural, whole-food sources - cannot provide. Labels. The new nutritional disclosure labels actually make it more difficult to determine what healthy ingredients are and what are not.

The old labels (still on many products), tell you more about what is really in the product. As a general rule of thumb, vitamins listed in the ingredient section of the label, it is synthetic or fractionated, otherwise it would be listed as the food. Now on the new labeling, you have to look under the “Nutrition facts” section as well (where it lists what percentage of the daily value of basic nutrients is contained in

the product). Where the vitamins are listed, look where it displays parenthesis (for example: vitamin A (as beta-carotene)”. The word “as” generally

denotes a synthetic or fractionated source, unless it sounds like a food. The ingredient label (since it is supposed to be food that you are eating) should sound like a food. So instead of the label saying, for

example, “vitamin C (as ascorbic acid)”, it should say “vitamin C (from acerola cherries)”.


A GOOD nutritional supplement would have ingredients like:


Carrot Powder, beet Powder, flax meal powder, brown rice powder, alfalfa juice powder, green tea leaf powder.


A BAD nutritional supplement would have ingredients like:


 Dicalcium phosphate, magnesuin oxide, ascorbic acid, d-alpha tocopherol, thiamine hydrochloride, ferrous fumerate, beta-carotene, hydrogenated vegetable oil, croscarmellose sodium, silicon dioxide, talc, camuba wax, yelloo beeswax, artificail colors (titanium dioxide, FD&C Yello wNo.6, FD&D Red No.40 FD&C Blue No.1).



Science cannot create life. Only life can create life. Obviously, there is a difference. Supplements food-based, isolated or synthetic, has detracted from the most important part of health and healing.

The basics of proper diet, exercise, detoxification, structure, mental/emotional and spiritual health must all be in order for true healing to occur. No supplement will work on its own if these

foundations are not in place. However, even when these foundations are in place, or if the situation is acute enough to necessitate a more immediate treatment response, supplement support may still

be needed for a while. You may also want to take one or more food-based supplements to ensure you are getting an adequate array of nutrients in your diet. When these situations arise, it is recommend food-based supplements be your first choice. How to known whether or not a supplement good choice? For starters, make sure it has the following characteristics: it is as close as possible to its natural form. The utmost care has been taken in all phases of its production,

from growing its ingredients, to manufacturing, testing for potency and quality control. Select from companies that have a long track record of providing high quality products that produce

good clinical results. Most vitamins sold are not food. They are

synthetically processed petroleum and/or hydrogenated sugar extracts, even if they say “natural” on the label. They are not in the

same chemical form or structural form as real vitamins are in foods; thus they are not natural for the human body. True natural food vitamins are superior to synthetic ones. Food vitamins are functionally superior to non-food vitamins as they tend to be preferentially absorbed and/ or retained by the body. Isolated, non-food

vitamins, even when not chemically different are

only fractionated nutrients. Studies cited throughout this paper suggest that the bioavailability of food vitamins is better than

that of most isolated USP vitamins, that they may have better effects on maintaining aspects of human health beyond traditional vitamin

deficiency syndromes, and at least some seem to be preferentially retained by the human body. It is not always clear if these advantages are due to the physiochemical form of the vitamin, with the

other food constituents that are naturally found with them, or some combination. Regardless, it seems logical to conclude that for purposes of maintaining normal health, natural vitamins are superior to synthetic ones. Unlike some synthetic vitamins, no natural vitamin has been found to not perform all of its natural functions. The truth

is that only foods, or supplements composed of 100% foods, can be counted on as not containing non-food vitamin analogues. How do you know if the vitamins on your kitchen counter are from whole foods or if they are synthetic? If the list of ingredients includes an actual vitamin like vitamin C” rather than an actual food that contains natural vitamin C like “acerola cherry powder”, you can bet that it is a synthetic vitamin. If you choose to use nutritional supplements, it is in your best interest to use only those products that list actual foods as their ingredients rather than synthetic and isolated vitamins. While some synthetic and isolated vitamins have been shown to provide minimal health benefits, on the whole, most of them cause more harm than good and you are far better off spending your money on whole foods. It is important to note that the principles in this article are just as relevant and applicable to minerals and mineral supplements.

Ascorbic Acid Is Not Vitamin C – Whole Food Vitamins:

This will be a short chapter, but after you’re finished with it, you will know more about vitamins than 95% of clinical nutritionists, doctors, supplement sales force, or bodybuilders. If that sounds arrogant or overstated, it really isn’t my fault. I’m just a messenger; a purveyor of information. Either I’m right or the 95% are right; can’t be both.

Without further ado, here’s the kernel:

Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C.
Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E.
Retinoic acid is not vitamin A

And so on through the other vitamins. Vast sums of money have been expended to make these myths part of Conventional Wisdom. If you have several college degrees and all this is news to you, don’t feel bad. Unless you think your education ended at Commencement. Which is generally true.


Vitamins are not individual molecular compounds. Vitamins are biological complexes. They are multi-step biochemical interactions whose action is dependent upon a number of variables within the biological terrain. Vitamin activity only takes place when all conditions are met within that environment, and when all co-factors and components of the entire vitamin complex are present and working together. Vitamin activity is even more than the sum of all those parts; it also involves timing.

Vitamins cannot be isolated from their complexes and still perform their specific life functions within the cells. When isolated into artificial commercial forms, like ascorbic acid, these purified synthetics act as drugs in the body. They are no longer vitamins, and to call them such is inaccurate.

A vitamin is

“a working process consisting of the nutrient, enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, and trace minerals activators.”

Dr. Royal Lee was the pioneer researcher in the field of whole food vitamins. For decades he documented the basic facts summarized in this chapter. His work has never been scientifically refuted. Anyone who seriously undertakes the study of vitamins today corroborates Lee’s work. His story is a fascinating study in itself, a study of indomitable perseverance in the pursuit of true principles. Jensen tells us that Royal Lee’s work will not be appreciated until the next century.

This is the next century, and it hasn’t happened yet.

Lee felt the full weight of organized drugs/medicine bearing down on him. Reading like something out of Schindler’s List, we learn that the FDA not only persecuted Lee for challenging the economics of synthetic vitamins, produced by giant drug companies, but that he was actually ordered by a court to burn all his research of the past 20 years! Burn his research! When has that ever happened in this country? They didn’t even do that to Larry Flynt. Or Andy Wakefield.

Going off on a tangent, ever wondered how the FDA attained its present position as attack dog for the drug companies and food manufacturers? It’s another whole story in itself. The precursor of the FDA was the Bureau of Chemistry. Up until 1912 the Bureau of Chemistry was headed up by a man named Dr. Harvey W. Wiley. Here’s a quote from Dr. Wiley [7] that illustrates where his interests lay:

No food product in our country would have any trace of benzoic acid, sulfurous acid or sulfites or any alum or saccharin, save for medical purposes. No soft drink would contain caffeine or theobromine. No bleached flour would enter interstate commerce. Our foods and drugs would be wholly without any form of adulteration and misbranding. The health of our people would be vastly improved and the life greatly extended. The manufacturers of our food supply, and especially the millers, would devote their energies to improving the public health and promoting happiness in every home by the production of whole ground, unbolted cereal flours and meals.”

Now obviously we can’t have a dangerous lunatic like this in charge of the public nutrition, can we? Dr. Wiley actually filed suit against the Coca-Cola company in an attempt to keep their artificial product out of interstate commerce, and off the market. Fortunately Wiley was eventually replaced by a saner individual, more attuned to the real nutritional needs of the American people, as determined by the experts who knew what was best for us: the food manufacturers. This was Dr. Elmer Nelson, and in his words we get an idea of the change in philosophy that marked the transformation of the Bureau of Chemistry into the FDA:

“It is wholly unscientific to state that a well-fed body is more able to resist disease than a poorly-fed body. My overall opinion is that there hasn’t been enough experimentation to prove that dietary deficiencies make one susceptible to disease.”

Oh, that’s better. Now we’ve got somebody who came to play.

Bernard Jensen [3] illustrates how the tobacco industry and the food giants like Coca Cola were indirectly behind the legal persecution of Royal Lee. Cigarette ads in the 40s and 50s showed medical doctors promoting the digestive benefits of smoking Camels. Or the advertising of Coke and other refined sugar foods stating that “science has shown how sugar can help keep your appetite and weight under control.” (Empty Harvest)

During this same period, Royal Lee [6] was kept in courts for years, fighting to keep the right to advertise his vitamin products, because he was a threat to the food manufacturers. Lee knew they were poisoning the American public. He proved that refined sugars and devitalized, bleached flours were destroying the arteries and the digestive system, causing heart disease and cancer.

Almost as bad as today.


OK, natural vs. synthetic. Let’s start with Vitamin C.

Most sources equate vitamin C with ascorbic acid, as though they were the same thing. They’re not. Ascorbic acid is an isolate, a fraction, a distillate of naturally occurring vitamin C. In addition to ascorbic acid, vitamin C must include rutin, bioflavonoids, Factor K, Factor J, Factor P, Tyrosinase, Ascorbinogen, and other components as shown in the figure below:

In addition, mineral co-factors must be available in proper amounts in order to have vitamin activity.

If any of these parts are missing, there is no vitamin C, no vitamin activity. When some of them are present, the body will draw on its own stores to try and make up the differences, so that the whole vitamin may be present. Only then will vitamin activity take place, provided that all other conditions and co-factors are present.

Ascorbic acid is described merely as the “antioxidant wrapper” portion of vitamin C; ascorbic acid protects the functional parts of the vitamin from rapid oxidation or breakdown. ([10] Somer p 58 “Vitamin C: A Lesson in Keeping An Open MindThe Nutrition Report)

For decades, over 90% of ascorbic acid in this country was manufactured at a facility in Nutley, New Jersey, owned by Hoffman-LaRoche, one of the world’s biggest drug manufacturers (1 800 526 0189). Here ascorbic acid is made from a process involving cornstarch and volatile acids. For decades, most U.S. vitamin companies bought their bulk ascorbic acid from this single facility. After that, marketing takes over. Each company makes its own labels, its own claims, and its own formulations, each one claiming to have the superior form of vitamin C, even though it all came from the same place, and it’s really not vitamin C at all.


The word synthetic means two things:

– occurs nowhere in nature

From the outset, it is crucial to understand the difference between vitamins and vitamin activity. The vitamin is the biochemical complex. Vitamin activity means the actual biological and cellular changes that take place when the stage is set for the vitamin complex to act.

Think of it like gas and a car. Pumping the gas into the tank doesn’t necessarily mean the car is going anywhere. Other conditions and factors must be also present, in order for Activity to occur. The gas line to the carburetor must be clear, the carburetor jets must be set, there must be an exact mixture of air flow, the ignition must be turned on, the spark plugs must be clean, the exact amount of gas must reach each spark plug right before it fires, no gas must be left over in the cylinder after the plug fires, etc. Getting the idea? If any of this stuff is missing, there’s no Activity: the car doesn’t run, or at least not very well.

Amazing as it may sound if you’re hearing this for the first time, vitamins are more than the synthetic fractions we are commonly taught they are. The ascorbic acid you buy at the grocery store every few weeks, thinking you are buying Vitamin C, is just a chemical copy of naturally occurring ascorbic acid, which itself is still only a fraction of the actual Vitamin C.

Real vitamin C is part of something living, and as such, can impart life.

Your synthetic, fractionated chemical ascorbic acid never grew in the ground, never saw the light of day, never was alive or part of anything alive. It’s a laboratory chemical, a cornstarch derivative, a sulfuric acid by-product. In your body it’s just another drug. Synthetic vitamins have toxic effects from mega-doses and actually can increase the white blood cell count. Vitamins are only necessary in minute quantities on a daily basis. Whole food vitamins, by contrast, are not toxic since the vitamin is complexed in its integral working form, and requires nothing from the body, and triggers no immune response.


Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Scurvy is characterized by bleeding gums, slow wound healing, softening bones, loose teeth, ulcerations of the mouth and digestive tract, general weight loss and fatigue. From 1650 to 1850 half of all seamen on transoceanic voyages died of scurvy.

It was discovered by ship surgeon Thomas Lind in the early 1800s that British sailors were spared the disease altogether simply by a diet rich in citrus fruits. Since limes travelled well, they were the common choice during the early years, and thus the expression “limeys” was coined to describe British sailors. It was later found both at sea and in prison fare that potatoes were equally successful in preventing scurvy, and they much cheaper to obtain. (Lancet, 1842) [11,12]

We find that there is less than 20 mg of ascorbic acid in a potato. Yet this small amount, since it is complexed in a food source, is all the body needs not only to prevent scurvy, but also to cure it, even in its advanced state. Such a remedy is described in detail in Richard Dana’s phenomenal journal Two Years Before the Mast, written in 1842 [12].

Whole food vitamin C as found in potatoes, onions, and citrus fruits is able to quickly cure any case of scurvy. By contrast, the fractionated chemical ascorbic acid has been shown to be insufficient in resolving a scurvy condition, simply because it does not act as a nutrient. (Lancet 1842)

Ascorbic acid simply cannot confer vitamin activity, as taught by the discoverer of vitamin C himself, another Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Albert Szent-Georgi.

Szent-Georgi discovered vitamin C in 1937. In all his research however, Szent-Georgi found that he could never cure scurvy with the isolated ascorbic acid itself. Realizing that he could always cure scurvy with the “impure” vitamin C found in simple foods, Szent-Georgi discovered that other factors had to be at work in order for vitamin activity to take place. So he returned to the laboratory and eventually made the discovery of another member of the vitamin C complex, as shown in the diagram above: rutin. All the factors in the complex, as Royal Lee and Dr. Szent-Georgi both came to understand, ascorbic acid, rutin, and the other factors, were synergists: co-factors which together sparked the “functional interdependence of biologically related nutrient factors.” (Empty Harvest p120) The term “wheels within wheels” was coined to describe the interplay of co-factors.

Each of the other synergists in the C complex has a separate function:

P factors for blood vessel strength
J factors for oxygen-carrying capacity of red cells
tyrosinase as an essential enzyme for enhancing white blood cell effectiveness

Ascorbic acid is just the antioxidant outer shell – the protector of all these other synergists so that they will be able to perform their individual functions.

Now I can hear you asking, what about Linus Pauling, double Nobel Prize laureate, and his lifetime espousal of megadosing on ascorbic acid – up to 10 grams per day. He lived to be 93. Are we saying that he took a synthetic vitamin all that time? Yes, that’s exactly right. Bernard Jensen suggests that ascorbic acid has an acidifying effect in part of the digestive tract, making an unfriendly environment for viruses, Candida, and pathogenic bacteria. Very doubtful that Pauling’s good health was the result of synthetic vitamin activity. Good genetics and maintaining an internal bioterrain not conducive to inflammation are likely what brought longevity to Linus Pauling. He eventually died of cancer at 93, but then, to quote Freddie Mercury, who wants to live forever?

Dr. Royal Lee’s phrase “ wheels within wheels” always pops up in any informed discussion of whole food vitamins. Essentially it means that individual synergists cannot function as a vitamin in a chemically isolated form, like ascorbic acid. Vitamins are living complexes which contribute to other higher living complexes – like cell repair, collagen manufacture, and maintenance of blood circulation. Ascorbic acid is not a living complex. It is a copy of a part of a living complex known as vitamin C.

Ascorbic acid is a fractionated, crystalline isolate of vitamin C.

Why are you a high school graduate or a college graduate or a doctor, and you don’t know this? Because drug manufacturers like things clean and simple and cheap to produce. To this simple fact add the politics and the control of information, which always come into play when anyone mentions the word “billions,” and you are beginning to get the idea about where to begin your investigation. Burned his research???


Most vitamins cannot be made by the body. They must be taken in as food. The best sources then are obviously whole foods, rich in vitamins. Because of soil depletion, mineral depletion, pesticides, air pollution, and erosion, it is common knowledge that foods grown in American soil today have only a fraction of the nutrient value of 70 years ago. That means a fraction of the vitamins and minerals necessary for normal human cell function. Royal Lee described the American diet as the cultivation and production of “devitalized foods.” Dr. Weston Price describes these empty products as the “foods of commerce.”

Think it’s gotten better or worse since their time? Thus the necessity for supplementation.


Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. And so on. Mineral deficiencies can cause vitamin deficiencies, and vice versa. Epidemic mineral deficiency in America is a well-documented result of systematic soil depletion. (See Minerals chapter:

So that is the other prime difference between whole food vitamins and synthetics: whole food vitamins contain within them many essential trace minerals necessary for their synergistic operation. Synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals, relying on, and depleting, the body’s own mineral reserves.


Following the German agricultural methods of Von Leibig in the mid-1800s, American farmers found that NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) was all that was necessary for crops to look good. (Frost p7)

As long as NPK is added to the soil, crops can be produced and sold year after year from the same soil. They look OK. But the trace minerals vital for human nutrition are virtually absent from most American soil after all these years. Many of these minerals, such as zinc, copper, and magnesium, are necessary co-factors of vitamin activity.

Depleted topsoil is one simple, widespread mechanism of both vitamin and mineral deficiency in American produce today. This doesn’t even take into account the tons of poisonous herbicides and pesticides dumped on crops. According to the UN, two million tons of pesticides are used worldwide annually. (Jensen, p69)

That was in Jensen’s day, back in the 80s These days, over 1 billion tons of pesticides are used annually, by the US alone ! [22]

American agri-business has one motive: profit. Such a focus has resulted in an output of empty produce and a nation of unhealthy people. The earth’s immune system is its soil. To be vital and capable of growing vital foods, soil must be rich in both minerals and soil-based organisms – life forms. Healthy produce naturally resists insects. Pesticides prevent plants from acquiring that natural immunity. Just like vaccines in humans.

Insects are like bad bacteria in the body: they are attracted to diseased tissue, though they do not cause it.


And we’re still only talking about people who actually eat raw fruits and vegetables, which is a minority. Processed food composes the majority of what most Americans eat. The only nutrients in most processed foods are “enriched” and “fortified” as described below.

When a doctor says that food supplements are all unnecessary because we can get everything we need from our food, that doctor is lacking basic information published and agreed upon by his own peers. Whether or not we need supplementation is no longer an issue, except for one who is totally out of touch. The issue is what kind and how much. Vitamin and mineral deficiency can be tagged to practically ANY disease syndrome known to man. DW Cavanaugh, MD of Cornell University actually concluded that

There is only one major disease, and that is malnutrition.” (Jensen, p8)

Malnutrition of the affluent is the natural result of the foods of commerce.


The best vitamins are called whole food vitamins. It will be difficult finding this out online, however, because the Web is dominated by mainstream nutritional theory, which means pharmaceutical underwriting. In the area of vitamins, the internet is 99% marketing; 1% actual information.

But then again, this isn’t Mission Difficult. This is Mission Impossible, Mr Hunt.

There are about 110 companies who sell vitamins in the US. Less than 5 of them use whole food vitamins. The reason is simple: whole food vitamins are expensive to make. A few of the largest pharmaceutical firms in the world mass produce synthetic vitamins for the vast majority of these 110 “vitamin” companies, who then put their own label on them, and every company claims theirs is the best! It’s ridiculous! Americans spend over $37 billion per year for synthetic vitamins. (Bradley, Nutrition Business Journal, 2015 [30])

Whole food vitamins are obtained by taking a vitamin-rich plant, removing the water and the fiber in a cold vacuum process, free of chemicals, and then packaging for stability. The entire vitamin complex in this way can be captured intact, retaining its “functional and nutritional integrity.” (DeCava p.23.) Upon ingestion, the body is not required to draw on its own reserves in order to complete any missing elements from the vitamin complex.

Mainstream marketing of vitamins and minerals has successfully created the myth that vitamins and minerals may be isolated from each other, that correct amounts may be measured out, and then we can derive total benefit from taking these fractionated chemical creations. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Vitamins and minerals, and also enzymes, work closely together as co-factors for each other’s efficacy. If one part is missing, or in the wrong form or the wrong amount, entire chains of metabolic processes will not proceed normally. Result: downward spiralling of health, imperceptible for long periods of time.


What is the marketing philosophy behind the prevalence of the type of synthetic vitamins available in the supermarket and mall vitamin stores? Simple: profit above all else. Once the public is shown that vitamin supplementation is necessary, the rest is marketing. Marketing is the art of persuading by suspending logic and twisting data into junk science.

Example: what’s the actual difference in composition between Wheaties and Total, two cereals put out by the same company? Total is advertised as being much more nutrient-rich than “ordinary” Wheaties. Look at the labels. What justifies the extra $1.30 for a box of Total? Answer: 1.5 cents worth of synthetic vitamins sprayed over the Wheaties. That’s it! That’s what “vitamin enriched” always means.

The other trick word is “fortified.” Generally that means that the food itself is devoid of nutrients or enzymes, so they tried to pump it up a little with some “vitamins.” Cheap synthetic vitamin sprays are all that is required for the manufacturer to use labels like “enriched” and “fortified.”

These words are red flags – if a food needs to be fortified or enriched, you can bet it was already dead.

The mega-vitamin theory doesn’t really hold when it comes to synthetics: If A Little Is Good, More Is Better. Macro doses of vitamin E, and also vitamin D have been shown to decrease immune function significantly. (DeCava) It stands to reason. Vitamins by definition are necessary in phenomenally small doses.

The discoverer of thiamine, a B vitamin, and the man who came up with the word vitamin, Dr. Casimir Funk, has this to say about synthetics:

“Synthetic vitamins: these are highly inferior to vitamins from natural sources, also the synthetic product is well known to be far more toxic.”

Nutrition authority DeCava describes it:

“Natural food-source vitamins are enzymatically alive. Man-made synthetic vitamins are dead chemicals.”

Oxymorons: military intelligence, rap music, Homeland Security, health insurance, synthetic vitamins.

The marketing of fractionated crystalline synthetic vitamins has been so successful that most nutritionists and doctors are unaware that there is something missing from these “vitamins.” Vitamin manufacturers compete for customers with identical products – they all bought their synthetic vitamins from the same couple of drug companies. To differentiate their product, each makes claims of “high potency.” Our vitamins are higher potency than theirs, etc.

The point is, the higher the potency, the more the druglike effects are present. Natural whole food vitamins are very low potency. Remember the 20 mg of vitamin C in a potato that was able to cure a patient of scurvy? That was low potency. Low potency is all we need. Low potency is enough to bring about vitamin activity. High potency overshoots the mark – the chemical is very pure and refined, like the difference between white sugar and the type of sugar that’s in an apple.


Generally speaking, if milligrams are being discussed at length, the author has no clue about vitamins. Synthetic vitamins are refined, high potency chemicals, and therefore may be accurately measured in milligrams, just like drugs. This has nothing to do with vitamin activity or nutrition, except in a negative way.

It’s one of those give-away phrases, like ‘carbs’ or calories, that indicate the speaker is generally unqualified.


The same type of incomplete action can be seen with any synthetic vitamin.

Let’s take beta carotene for a minute, which the body can turn into vitamin A.

Now you’ll remember that vitamin A is necessary for good eyesight, DNA synthesis, and protects cells from free radicals. A study reported in Apr 94 in the NEJM of some 30,000 Finnish subjects showed conclusively that synthetic vitamin A had no antioxidant effect whatsoever. [15]

A true antioxidant helps to protect heart muscle, lungs, and artery surfaces from breaking down prematurely. In this study, the subjects who received the synthetic beta carotene actually had an 8% higher incidence of fatal heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer than those who got the placebo (sugar pill). Stands to reason: the synthetic brought no vitamin activity to the tissues that needed it.

As a dead, purified chemical introduced into the body, the synthetic further stressed the immune system, the liver, and the kidneys which all had to try to break down this odd chemical and remove it from the body. It would be bad enough if they were harmless, but synthetic vitamins actually have a net negative effect.

Vitamin A

was first discovered in 1919. By 1924, it had been broken down and separated from its natural whole food complex: “purified.” By 1931, LaRoche – one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, even today – had succeeded in “synthesizing” vitamin A. That means they had created a purely chemical copy of a fraction of naturally occurring vitamin A. Naturally occurring vitamin A is found associated with an entire group of other components:

– Retinols
– Retinoids
– Retinal
– Carotenoids
– Carotenes
– Fatty acids
– Vitamin C
– Vitamin E
– Vitamin B
– Vitamin D
– Enzymes
– Minerals

Isolated from these other factors, vitamin A is a fraction which cannot perform its biological functions. Taken as a synthetic, it must then draw on this list of resources already in the body in order to complete its make-up. Whole food vitamin A, by contrast, is already complete and ready to go.

Most synthetic vitamin A consists only of retinal, retinol, or retinoic acid. The well-publicized potential for toxicity with mega doses of vitamin A involves one of these three. Vitamin A toxicity, known as hypervitaminosis, always results from an excess of synthetic, “purified” vitamin A, and never from whole food vitamin A. (DeCava, p 86)

Other effects of vitamin A toxicity include:

– tumor enhancement
– joint disorders
– osteoporosis
– extreme dryness of eyes, mouth and skin,
– enlargement of liver and spleen
– immune depression
– birth defects


is a precursor the body can convert to vitamin A. Unfortunately, as a supplement, synthetic beta carotene is usually “stabilized” in refined vegetable oils. In this trans fatty acid form, oxidation occurs and the chemically “pure” beta carotene can no longer act as a nutrient, because it was changed.

Almost all synthetic beta carotene is produced by the Swiss drug giant Hoffman-LaRoche. This form can no longer be converted to vitamin A. The best it can be is worthless, and the worst is toxic.

Natural vitamin A and beta carotene are well known as immune boosters and cancer fighters, in their role as antioxidants. Synthetic vitamin A by contrast has actually brought about significant increases in cancer. The same Finnish study we saw above provided smokers with large doses of synthetic beta carotene. Lung cancer incidence increased 18%! (NEJM Apr 94 “The Alpha Tocopherol Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study Group”) [15]

These findings were corroborated two years later in another study written up in Lancet. Pharmacologic doses of synthetic beta carotenes were found to block the antioxidant activity of the other 50 naturally occurring carotenoids in the diet. Anti-cancer activity was thus blocked by the synthetic. (Lancet 1996) [14]

With the vast outpouring of wrong information about vitamins A and C, the findings of a 1991 article in Health Counselor are no surprise: 50% of Americans are deficient in vitamin A and 41% are deficient in vitamin C.

Synthetic vitamins cannot prevent deficiencies.


In one experiment, synthetic vitamin B (thiamine) was shown to render 100% of a group of pigs sterile! 100% would be considered a significant finding. (Dr. Barnett Sure, Journ Natr 1939) Perhaps the fact that synthetic vitamin B comes from coal tar, maybe that has something to do with it, you think? Then there’s vitamin B12, which comes from activated sewage sludge. (Frost p 60) Been shooting blanks since you started on those multi’s?

For the licensed dieticians and clinical nutritionists reading this in disbelief because it is too “unscientific,” consider the way Theron Randolph MD delineated between natural and synthetic:

“A synthetically derived substance may cause a reaction in a chemically susceptible person when the same material of natural origin is tolerated, despite the two substances having identical chemical structures. The point is illustrated by the frequency of clinical reactions to synthetic vitamins – especially vitamin B1 and C – when the [same] naturally occurring vitamins are tolerated.”

Always keep this idea in mind when confronted with the phony marketing hook “bio-identical.” If it’s not made by your body, it can’t be bio-identical.


According to Los Angeles naturopath, Dr. Jack Singh, all commercial lecithins in supplements, as well as most vitamin D, comes from irradiated vegetable oils. That’s rancid, oxidizing trans fatty acids! A birthday party of free radicals. This is the precise mechanism for arterial wall breakdown prior to plaque deposits, then arteriosclerosis, then heart disease. I thought we were supposed to be taking vitamins to stay healthy!


Why is this information so difficult to find? It’s in none of the “alternative” health ‘zines, blogs, sites, or any of the mainstream media.

Alternative-Lite guru Julian Whittaker, in his summer 1998 newsletter actually had the temerity to state outright “Synthetic vitamins and whole food vitamins are identical.” I’m sure his synthetic vitamin company and all its retailers were reassured by this incredibly arrogant and flagrantly inaccurate pronouncement from the fat man. But who is objecting? Only those clients of the 5 companies who know enough to take whole food vitamins, because they have become educated to realize the difference. These are the vast minority, having no control of the media.

Royal Lee and Harvey Wiley lost. Nobody knows who they are today, except we few. This is no accident. What everybody does know is Pepsi and Wonder Bread and prednisone and Double Whoppers with Cheese and Zantac and Baskin-Robbins and Long’s Drug Store. And grocery store vitamins: synthetic vitamins. That’s America, today as the product of yesterday. Control of information in America today is hands down the most sophisticated systems of influence ever devised. The simple ideas contained in this chapter are simply not available to the mass consciousness. The documentation is out there, but you really must persist.

100 years ago, if a medical doctor saw a case of cancer he would call all his colleagues to come and have a look, telling them it was unlikely they would see another case, as cancer was so rare. People rarely died of heart attacks; in fact the term heart attack itself didn’t even exist. There was no incidence at all of atherosclerosis. Diabetes was practically unheard of. What did they eat? Fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, whole grains, butter, and lard. But none of it was processed with drugs and chemicals.

Today one in three dies of cancer. One in two dies of heart disease. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. (Vital Statistics) For anyone born after 2003, there is a one in 3 chance of Type 2 diabetes by 2030. Is that progress? If you are a food manufacturer it is, and especially if you are a drug manufacturer.

In 2007 the WHO ranked the US as #39 in the world in infant mortality. Today, we’re at # 54 [] Male sperm count is less than 50% of what it was in 1929. (1981 University of Florida report, Natural vs. Synthetic) Infant mortality is up; birth defects are up. We spend $1.5 trillion per year for ‘health care’, most of which goes for administration and executive salaries.

Who are the largest advertisers for TV, and online and printed media? Right: drug companies and food manufacturers. Do they want to keep the ball rolling? You bet. Will they kill you to do it? You bet. Ask Jeff Bradstreet. Do they want people to take charge of their own health by natural inexpensive foods and supplements? Negative. A cure for cancer has been “right around the corner” since Nixon’s “war on cancer.”. People are starting to ask questions; they’re less inclined to believe the slick ads coming every 10 minutes on TV and in Newsweek.

Perhaps Hippocrates did not envision doctors as detail men or drug reps. He most likely thought like Henry Bieler, MD:

“Nature, if given the opportunity is always the greatest healer. It is the physician’s role to assist in this healing, to play a supporting role.” – Finding the Right Cure for You

So, what do you do? Well, you may now have some insight that your vitamin needs are not being met by the GNC generics. Wallach used to talk about expensive urine from these unmetabolized grocery store synthetic placebos.

The water- soluble vitamins are best obtained through organic produce grown in mineral-rich soil. The best supplements in this category are the top-shelf green foods, like David Sandoval’s Best of Greens, and its equivalents.

The fat- soluble vitamins, A, E, and D are best obtained through fish, raw dairy, avocado, raw nuts, raw coconut, and clean meats. High end supplements like Udo’s Choice, MOR, and Nordic Naturals can round out your EFA requirements

Beyond this it’s MLM marketing roulette, and if you can’t spot the mark in the first 5 minutes, baby, it’s you.

Magnesium Stearate: Does Your Supplement Contain This Potentially Hazardous Ingredient?

  • Many supplement makers add “flow agents” and other fillers to their supplements. One potentially hazardous additive commonly used is magnesium stearate.
  • Magnesium stearate is essentially a chalk-like substance, which prevents the supplements from sticking together and allows the machinery to run smoother and faster, which equates to cost savings during the manufacturing process. Magnesium stearate is not a source of magnesium and has no benefits, but may have a detrimental effect on your immune function as stearic acid has been linked to suppression of T cells. The filler also stimulates your gut to form a biofilm, which can prevent proper absorption of nutrients in your digestive tract

It's common knowledge that drugs, vitamins or supplements contain more than just the active ingredient. Something has to encapsulate them―hold them together―in a form that not only makes them usable, but producible by a manufacturer in massive quantities.

In the U.S. many supplement makers are adding "flow agents" into their capsules. Their only purpose is to keep ingredients from sticking to equipment during mixing and compression. They make manufacturing faster and easier, but it's not impossible to produce the final product without them. Not using them simply adds to manufacturing costs and final sales price of the product, but there is clearly no reason this ingredient is added for consumer benefit.

Magnesium stearate is a commonly used and potentially harmful additive found in many supplements. This is a substance I have warned about for a long time because of its subtle ability to cause possible harm to your intestine, possibly even preventing the proper absorption of nutrients.

Potentially Harmful Effects of Magnesium Stearate

Magnesium stearate is formed by adding a magnesium ion to stearic acid. The compound has lubricating properties, which is why it's often used in the making of supplements, as it allows the machinery to run faster and smoother, and prevents the pills or capsules from sticking to each other.

However, previous research has shown that stearic acid suppresses T cells—your natural killer cells—which are a key component of your immune system1. According to that study, stearic acid causes the collapse of cell membrane integrity—an effect that was found to be time and dose dependent—which, ultimately, can destroy cell function.

In my view, if you're taking a supplement, making sure it's a high quality, natural food-based supplement that does not include potentially harmful fillers and additives such as magnesium stearate.
